If you’re anything like me, you won’t have watched too many Phoenix Suns games this season and will have had no idea who Tyler Ulis was. Well, that changed for me today as this kid filled the timeline with lots of great basketball stuff.
Firstly, Ulis was involved in something I don’t think I’ve ever seen before in the NBA… two guys at (a generously listed) 5’10” in a jump ball against each other.
As the Suns made their way down the court, Ulis lost control of the outlet pass, diving to the floor to retrieve the ball. The ever-sneaky Isaiah Thomas was quick to pounce, wrapping up Ulis and forcing the referee to jump it up. Thomas’ grin was hilarious as he urged the Phoenix crowd to get into this rare moment for the little guys as the two sub-six footers squared off.
Thomas won the tip but there was more to come from Ulis…
As the game was winding down, Phoenix’s Eric Bledsoe tied things up with only 4 seconds remaining on a drive from the top of the lane. Boston inbounded the ball to Thomas who, (while trying to let the ball run a bit to give himself more time) was pounced upon by Suns rookie Marquese Chriss causing the ball to spill…
Ulis didn’t waste this opportunity as he grabbed the ball, stepped back and nailed the game winning jump shot as time expired.
An amazing night out for Ulis who posted a fun stat line of 20 points, 5 assists, 2 rebounds and a steal while connecting on 8/12 from the field in a career high 33 minutes. Definitely another pocket rocket to keep an eye on as the season winds down.
And for those like me who didn’t know who this kid was?
If you don’t know, now you know!
