Paul George of the Indiana Pacers got his team out
It’s time to take a look at our all-time greatest ABA/NBA #48 as the Hoop Diary Jersey Countdown continues. This one is an easy choice as there’s only one player in the history of the League to wear that number.
Let’s take a look.
With the 25th overall pick in the 1970 NBA Draft, the Portland Trailblazers selected Walt Gilmore from Fort Valley State University. A 6’6″ small forward weighing in at 225 pounds, Walt played small forward for Portland during the 1970-71 season.
Finding information on Gilmore has proven to be quite difficult. It seems either injury of lack of opportunity saw Gilmore feature in only 27 games that season as a reserve for Portland. He averaged 2.1 points and 2.7 rebounds per game in 9.7 minutes per game.
At the conclusion of the 1970-71 season Gilmore was waived by the Trailblazers and never returned to the NBA. Not only did Walt not return, but to this day neither has his jersey number of choice.
A default choice for this award but still a worthy recipient as we toast Hoop Diary’s all-time greatest number 48, Walt Gilmore.
