Devin Harris has signed with the Dallas Mavericks for the veteran’s minimum of $1.3 million. This may not seem like interesting news, until you hear why the Mavs got him so cheap.
Harris had originally agreed to terms with the Mavericks on a three-year, $9 million deal before a routine pre-signing physical revealed that he had a dislocated toe that required surgery.
Needless to say, both parties agreed to pull the deal and Dallas went on to use most of its cap space to acquire Monta Ellis and Samuel Dalembert. All that remained in the budget was a one-year veteran minimum deal for Harris and a reportedly identical offer to ex-Spur DeJuan Blair.
A tough break certainly but there’s no doubting Harris’ toughness either.
I’m no Doctor but I’m guessing a dislocated toe would be quite painful. Probably a touch less painful than losing just under $8 million in contract dollars though.
